Introduction
Even the best industrial sewing machines face operational hiccups. Understanding how to quickly diagnose and fix common problems can save your factory hours of lost production time. Here are 5 common issues and their solutions.
1. Thread Breakage
Problem: The upper or lower thread snaps frequently during sewing.
Solution: Check the thread tension dial; if it is too tight, the thread will break. Also, ensure the needle is inserted correctly and is not bent. Poor quality thread is another common culprit.
2. Skipped Stitches
Problem: The machine fails to interlock the top and bottom threads, leaving gaps in the seam.
Solution: This is almost always a needle issue. Replace the needle. Ensure you are using the correct needle size for the fabric thickness (e.g., thicker needles for denim, finer needles for silk).
3. Fabric Not Feeding Properly
Problem: The fabric bunches up or does not move forward evenly.
Solution: Check the feed dogs and presser foot pressure. If lint is trapped under the needle plate, clean it out. If sewing very thick material, you may need a walking foot machine instead of a standard drop-feed machine.
4. Needles Breaking
Problem: The needle snaps while sewing.
Solution: Stop pulling the fabric from the back; let the feed dogs do the work. Pulling bends the needle, causing it to strike the needle plate and break.
5. Machine Jamming (Bird's Nesting)
Problem: A massive tangle of thread forms under the fabric, locking the machine.
Solution: This usually means the machine was threaded incorrectly. Cut the tangle loose, clean the bobbin area, and completely rethread the machine from scratch, making sure the presser foot is UP while threading.
